CarbonFix

Research identified South Holland as a potential key link and hub in the international CO2 network for Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). This includes opportunities for CCU in biogenic chemistry, fuels, concrete production, and greenhouse horticulture, as well as CCS through storage in empty gas fields beneath the seabed. These initiatives are not only vital for environmental sustainability but are also crucial for building a future-proof economy. If these opportunities are seized with ambition, South Holland can become a leading CO2 hub, setting a bold example for Europe.

This is the vision behind the CarbonFix initiative, commissioned by the Province of South Holland. At the core of this transformation, we led a co-creation process with the region’s stakeholders, working together towards an exciting and sustainable future. Together with a network of experts, businesses, and key players, we transformed regional opportunities into clear, actionable strategies and a roadmap towards 2040. Through this collaboration, we developed practical solutions for the breakthroughs needed to scale up CO2 storage and removal, positioning South Holland as a leader in the transition to a carbon-negative economy.

The recommendations of our process have been officially received by the Deputy of South Holland and the Secretary of the KGG Committee and the House of Representatives of the Dutch Parliament, and have been shared with all committee members for further development.
